Your Pre-Moving Checklist: Don’t Forget the Essentials!
Moving is one of the most hectic times in your life, because it’s that time again to move all of your valuables, odds and ends, and anything else that you want to take. Plus, you have to consider cleaning, transporting your things, and moving into a new home.
While this process can be stressful, our Montreal movers know exactly how to make your process as easy as possible, no matter what you need to get done. In our many years of moving, there are a few things that we’ve realized need to get done before you’ve started your move.
We’ve compiled a list of all the things that your family should do before a move is finalized, and our list of everything you may need to remember should help you streamline the process in the future.
Prepare your kids:
-The first thing you should do is plan non-academic/after school activities to get your children interested in the new area, and register them for school.
Your local services:
-Cancel any memberships that you might have back home. It can be frustrating when you find out that they’re still charging you, and will only stop charging you when you show up. It’s best to take care of this early.
-Open a bank account in your new location, and cancel your current bill-paying system. Sometimes, you’ll need to set up a direct deposit account at your new job to get paid- and you’ll need to have an account for this.
-Find a doctor for your family. This includes sending medical records and refilling any essential prescriptions.
Changing your Address:
-You have to officially change your address with the post office. A simple visit to your local post office is generally all it takes, plus a change of address form dropped in the mail-box. You should also inform businesses or subscriptions of your move if you want to keep some post from your old home.
-Decide what you’re going to watch when you get there: cable, internet services? The sky is the limit, but the key is to avoid fees and charges.
-Register to vote in your new area! This is one of the easiest ways to establish residency in your new location.
Update your License and Utilities:
-Register your license and set up/cancel utilities as needed. This includes electricity, cell phone, gas, internet, and water.
Finally, the Move:
-Reconfirm your moving arrangements. Our Montreal movers (https://www.adtmoving.com/en) like just a little bit of notice (1-2 weeks) before you’re officially ready. Prepare payment, and consider cleaning services. If you’re going to be displaced over a long distance, sometimes it’s useful to look into a hotel.
